Pompeii 99
The end of the 70’s and 1st 1/2 of the 80s were one of a small number
of creative explosions in recent times. Punk and New Wave styles gave permission
to make music that was creatively exciting, without having to neccessarily wallow
in obscurity.
Out of the fertile Los Angles “New Wave” scene from which came Devo,
the Go Gos and the Knack. Pompeii 99 was a band with ambitious artisitic ambitions
with Lead singers Val and Gitane Demone, with Cram and PollySci in the band.
With lyrics that poked society with a stick, surf/ Sergio Leone guitars, pounding
drums with French horns traversing multiple incongruous musical styles in 4
minutes, probably nobody other than Frank Zappa had previously reconciled such
disparities.
In the tumultous world of well known but struggling bands it came to pass that
essentially Pompeii 99 backed up iconic Goth pioneers Christian Death singer
Roz for a Christian Death European tour and second album, and continued as Christian
Death to this, thus rendering unto Pompeii 99, well, a Christian Death of sorts.
